So close…

18 02 2011

Another week has passed, and with that, another meeting! So yesterday, Jamie and I chaired a debate on a 3-page bill that will be submitted to youth and gov. The bill was allowing for the students to challenge an unfair assignment legally. The nay-sayers said that this bill gave too many rights to students, and the school curriculum would collapse. The bill passed 8-2. So, any thoughts? are you for this? against this? since it is going to youth and gov I can give your thoughts to my teammates who can state your thoughts in the debate, so whenever i mention a bill, you can give your thoughts, even have a debate in the comments. So this bill states that if a student thinks an assignment is unfair, they can write a note to the department head, who will determine whether the complaint is valid. It will then be addressed by a council of department heads and maybe a principle if he/she feels it is necessary. Then each side shall state their case, and the council shall decide whether the student is right or the teacher, like a court. Oh, and if you were wondering, I am for this bill.

Another week, another meeting…

Today was productive. I also signed up for another MUN at a nearby town. Jamie is coming to the MUN too. It does take place for a few weeks still, that gives us some time to research our countries. I do not know which country I got, but i hope it’s Canada. Canada has been my primary country in the debate team whenever we practice MUN, so I already know a lot about Canada. So in the actual meeting, we discussed the difference between socialism (the government cares for you your entire life) and communism (the government controls all aspects of the country). Then, we debated a bill drafted years ago. It was about increasing the number and quality of driving tests. Jamie and I co-chaired. There was only one person opposing the bill, and his reasoning is that if this bill is passed, there would be too long a line at the dmv, therefore this bill is evil and must be destroyed. At the end, we didn’t even vote on the bill, we just closed debate because that one person tried to filibuster, so we yelled at him and told him to sit down and shut up so we could close debate.

Jaime’s first time chairing

5 02 2011

‘ello, as you might have known, today was the rescheduled date of Wednesday’s debate team meeting. It went pretty well, Jamie didn’t know how to even start the meeting. Of course I only had a guess, but it was right. The vice president of the team had to come over and help us. So during the meeting, we debated a past Youth and Gov. bill about how if a representative dies in office, the governor would be able to assign someone to take the rep’s place. My ears were bleeding cause Jamie was whacking the gavel every 5 seconds. And also, a member of the team didn’t know what the parties were, so we were passing notes (a system we picked up in MUN, so people can have a conversation about the meeting without interrupting the speaker) and i was trying to explain the major differences in each of the parties. The bill passed by a majority vote, only two republicans opposed it, everyone else was for it. So that was today’s meeting, I’m going to post after every debate team meeting and major caucus and such, so it’s going to be about once a week from now on.

Snow day blues

4 02 2011

Ok, remember that snow storm we had earlier in the week? Well, it cancelled school on the day we have debate team, which is the club that is sending us to Youth in Gov. But it’s not too much to worry about, tomorrow we are having another meeting (cue awesome trumpets). Well, I am hoping that tomorrow Jamie and I can have some practice chairing and co-chairing a committee. And hopefully if Jamie gets too “dictator-y” I can slap him or something. Well in other news, my bill I’m proposing at Youth in Gov. is about teaching the metric system alongside US standard in elementary schools. This, of course, has almost no opposition, because metric is AWESOME! So I’m gonna have more posts soon, maybe once a week or so, and I’m also thinking about making a video-blog that I will post here so you all can see Jamie, the state capital, and even me, so stay tuned… or not, I really don’t care.

Hey

3 02 2011

Good day, my name is Tomfred (awesome, right?). I am in high school. So pretty much if anyone wants to follow whatever I do, (it’s not that interesting, really) I will post any major happenings. So first, an intro: a major theme in my life is politics, I am on my school’s debate team, I follow the news often, etc. In fact, right now i am preparing for an event, called “Youth in Government” pretty much we go to the state capital for two days and become reps. We propose bills, run the commities, (sorry for my spelling) work on those bills. Last week we had the district caucus, where we voted people to become senators, judiciary judges, lawyers, chairmen, etc. Speaking of which, i was voted to become the co-chairman of the judiciary commitie, which works on bills dealing with the judical system. My friend, let’s call him “Jamie”, even though thats not his real name, is a… how should i say… interesting person, imagine a tall, scottish, pretends to be a terrorist, guy. He always mentions blowing someone up or something like that, he was voted for chairman of the energy and convervation commitie… I’m sure halfway through he’ll say “DANCE MONKEY BOY!” anyway… That’s all for this post, if anyone even reads this, I’ll at least post what whent on at the youth and government convention
